How to Find Books on Shelves ?

The Library is using 21st edition of DDC for classifying the books (subjects)

Each book/ subject is given a classification number or shelf number (also known as the call number) to help you find the book you want in the Library. You can find the shelf number of a book by using the library OPAC. Take care to note down the shelf number exactly, including any punctuation and alphabets. Shelf numbers may include one or more decimal points. The books are placed in numerical sequence on the shelves as given in the examples below. You can find out where the shelf numbers are located by asking a member of staff.

530           Physics

530.11                 Relative Theory

530.12                 Quantum Mechanics

530.124                                Wave Mechanics

To help you further, you may find 3 letters at the end of the shelf number. These letters are an abbreviation of the author's surname or of the organisation which has produced the book. The letters are arranged alphabetically after each individual shelf number. Small c. denotes the copy number of the title.

572 SEN c.6

574.192 GUP c.3

530.15 HAR c.3

If you have problems identifying the shelf number, understanding how books are arranged, or locating the book on the shelf, please ask a member of the Library staff for help.
